It's not Christmas

Supposedly it's Christmas but it really doesn't feel like it. Christmas in Japan is basically Valentines day. Most couples go out to dinner, exchange gifts and then all the hotels are booked for the night or so I'm told. Otherwise there are some Christmas decorations up at many stores but as I'm working now I don't have time to shop so I've seen very few this year. Today, Christmas Eve and tomorrow Christmas Day are just regular work days in Japan.

The other thing they do is eat a cake. Where that tradition came from I have no idea but every other store and restaurant in Japan sells Christmas cakes. They are generally some kind of white cake with white frosting and strawberries. You can reserve them in advance. Even 7/11 and all the other convenience stores have them.

So, Merry Christmas.

...without mentioning the other japanese "christmas cake" meaning: an older, unmarried woman, or rather, something that's hard to get rid of after the 25th...

cruel, but kind of amusing. personally, i like the word for guys with comb-overs...barcode!

Almost, maybe as popular as Christmas Cake is Christmas Chicken. I don't know what kind of marketing job KFC did to make this a reality, but the holiday has become synonymous with Fried Chicken, and not only KFC but MOSBurger and even some conbini chains offer reservations for special chicken meals for Christmas. You should find a picture of The Colonel in santa suit to put up here, I'm sure that's easy enough to find in Tokyo...

Greggman you didn't mention that the 7/11 strawberry shortcake cost about $30- $45 They even have food platters that you can order ahead of time.
