Bloggin
Bloggin I read my friend Danny's Daypop's Top 40 list at least once every 2 or 3 days and today there was a headline "Blogging with MovableType" but that wasn't what caught my attention.

What caught my attention was the URL which was www.tokyoshoes.com. Could the Tokyo in Tokyoshoes.com be another blogger in Tokyo? I don't actually track any other blogs at the moment. Once in a while I stumble on something but for some reason, even without reading any blogs I find I spend way WAY too much time on the net.

But, wasting more time as usual I followed the link and found a pretty interesting blog there. That some how led me to japanmediareview.org which claims blogging by foriengers is big in Japan and is slowly catching on with the locals and that led me to easterwood.org which lists over 100 "expat" blogs.

Where did all these people come from? Even funnier, I found two of my friends, people I actually hang out with, have blogs listed there. One of them I didn't even know had a blog. I guess he did mention he was going to put up this video on his blog just after he and my other friend got done making it but for some reason it didn't dawn on me to ask about his site (or maybe I did and I forgot by the time I got home. That happens a lot to me).

On top of that, the fact that both of them were listed made me wonder how involved with the whole Tokyo Expat Blog Scene are they? It's never come up before in any conversations with them.

It also makes me curious, how much time to people spend updating their blogs. As much as my site gets updated I never feel like I have enough time. Just making this post here will probably take me 30 to 45 minutes. Looking up all those links, finding my way back to the places that caused me to want to write this post takes time, and then proofreading, something I don't do enough of because I've already spend too much time writing the damn post. It can take another 10 to 20 minutes at a minimum if there are pictures involved and often a lot more. You've got to find them, load them into photoshop, crop, filter, level, save, then you've got to upload them etc. It makes me wonder how someone can keep a blog like Tokyoshoes.com. Every couple of days she's got new pictures up there.

I suppose the first thing people might point out his how big my site is. Maybe I'm getting the same reaction by looking at these sites that people get looking at mine. "Where do they find the time?" I don't actually spend that much time on mine. You can tell, sometimes there will be nothing for a week or more. I also do things in batches. I have a post dating system so for example I can add 10 or 20 "10 second photo gallery" images and post date them 1 every 2 weeks or something. If I happen to have a lot I can make it appear I'm posting new content often when in reality I just spent 4-6 hours one Sunday night making 10 images or reviews and post dating them.

Then, I also wonder, how much time do these people spend reading each other's sites. Like I mentioned, I read almost no-one's sites. In fact, since my friend Danny stopped his blog there are no blogs I look at daily or even weekly. The closest would be joelonsoftware.com although I'm not sure that qualifies as a blog, at least if you were playing "which one is not like the others" his would be the one. So, when I see a *typical* blog with links to 10, 20, 40 other blogs I wonder, are they reading all of them everyday? How much time is that a day?

Tell me, how much time do you spend writing a blog if you have one and how much time do you spend reading them if you do? (ps, this post took me about 1 hr)

Comments:

Glad you like my blog... [ e ]

Let痴 see, each post takes me about an hour (for writing and photoshopping), plus taking the pictures, plus responding to comments equals a whole lot of time!  And, I read other痴 blogs for about as much time.  Currently I am working part time which leaves me the opportunity, and I enjoy doing it.

I have been a fan of your site since I moved to Japan 2 years ago.  Will you please come to a blog meetup so we can finally meet you in person.  The Japan expat blog scene has developed into a real community.

Bloggin... [ e ]

I spend a lot of time blogging and reading blogs. I have in fact three blogs that I write in almost daily.
I honestly don't know how I make time for it all because I also have projects and I work on friends websites.
And yes I do have a job and a family and I don't neglect either. At work I do have pockets of time where I can do personal things.
Of course once my baby is asleep while I watch television or pretend I'm watching I am usually sitting at the computer.
So I guess to answer you question, er... I spend a lot of time online blogging.

fear and loathing in blogland [ e ]

You don't read otehr's blogs. Hmmmm. You do get a bit whiney and tell your readers about dilemmas but never aboutthe resolutions (like you left your job so what's the status? Things like that). These kind of dail/weekly/annual - NORMAL - human dramas are fascinationg and are what draw me to people's blogs. Sadly, outsideo f the occasional observation on toys or food or whatever, I am slowly realizing this is a blog spot that might not be worth reading anymore. It's like all the life an energy that used to be Greggman.com has since deteriorated into whining.

I know of a few lurkers who visit your blog. When blogs comeup around the work lunch table we used to (briefly) talk about how you studied for your Japanese exams and then one of us would be impressed that you passed, etc. the last time your blog came up it was simply "he whines a lot maybe that's why he is so lonely".

I don't know. Maybe reading how you don't really read other blogs got me thinking that maybe you're an insular person. Maybe it reflects your station in life. If so, I hope it improves, but the entertainment value  the freshness of Greggman.com is dwindling. Maybe if you read more blogs from other folks you'd make some friends in Japan that you COULD hang out with, and maybe you'd find that spark in your life, and as readers - we can cheer for you again. I know it sounds fucked up to rag on someone whose diary-like hobby is done - NOT for the benefit of others - but I see a connection with your posts chronicling your mid-life crisis and...

Wah.... forget it.

I hop e things get better for you and I hope you branch out and check out other folks'  blogs more often. Variety is the spice of life. Well, variety and ice cold gin and buxom, rosebud nippled girlfriends who know what you're talking 'bout when you mention Hunter S. thompson and who dig it when you speak spanish to them while you shag....

oh  - I enjoy reading blogs from around the world and from different kinds of personalities. I stumbled upon your blog a year and a half ago or so and dug it. It had a lighter side to it and covered trivial bits of esoteric Japanese pop culture. I like that.  Anyway, I have found a number of blog spots I read regularly, but this one is starting to get less attention. I suppose that's why I don't blog, myself; I spend too much time reading other people's blogs, particularly those of my rosebud-nippled princess..

small blogosphere, isn't it... [ e ]

actually, once you get linked (passive or active) to one tokyo blog, it looks like you get linked to them all ;)

i initially found out i was linked to by www.vudeja.com when he posted in my comments section and left the URL, then i started following the links in his blog roll, and found all the sites you mentioned in the post, including Tokyo Shoes, Nadine..there are a lot of nice sites out there, and certainly way more artistic than i could come up with.

even weirder - you know where the last Tokyo Blog meet was? The Pink Cow, which i actually blogged about a few weeks ago. We went there for Elly's birthday if you remember...honto semai sekai da na...

Just Reading [ e ]

I spend an hour a day reading blogs on Japan only.  I do it at work for 5 to 10 minutes at a time.

I agree with the comment that you don't follow up on posts that someone above mentioned.  It would be nice if you followed up every now and then.  I don't agree that you whine, I think your just relaying the facts as you see it.  If that's whining oh well.  I read your blog first, japannewbie second (Harvey hardly updates!).  I used to read the easterwood.org site but he is to liberal for me since the war and now that he has the baby and all, I'm just not that interested in hearing about his baby...different strokes, diff folks.

Honesty [ e ]

People are fascinated by blogs because of the honesty. Where can you find honesty on News, TV, Film? That is all propaganda. Those are always done by people paid to get your attention. Diary Blogs are full of honesty and often without an agenda. And we all have an internal whining voice, sometimes it is great to see it expressed externally. Keep it up!

This is a great post by the way:

I'm a blogger [ e ]

I'm a blogger. JapanNewbie.com... the one that didn't get mentioned. (涙)

I don't update so often as you can see... cause I'm lazy.  I'll usually just use a single
photo... crop it up... moveabletype the entry, ftp the image, update the front page. That's it.
Takes me about 30-40 minutes.

I don't read so many other blogs.  Just here... some friends online comics... and I browse discussion boards
quite a bit.

Blogging.

It should be a sport.

me too [ e ]

I blog too, but it looks like I don't blog half as much as you guys. I just can't get used to the idea that people may find it interesting, even though I spend time reading similar stuff written by other people. This site is friggin' HUGE though! Nice stuff, G!
