No Shoes!!!
No Shoes!!! I need shoes desperately and I can't find any here in Tokyo. The 2 relatively nice pairs of shoes I brought with me are over 4 years old now and starting to fall apart. Probably from the 1 to 5 miles a day I walk in Tokyo. I've been shoe shopping about 10 days over the last 2 months now and so far I've failed to find any.

The problem is Japanese feet are smaller than American feet. Supposedly the average size of a Japanese man's foot is an American size 8. The average in America is a size 10. All the department stores in Japan only carry to size 9 as do pretty much all the shoe stores.

Note that I'm talking about nicer shoes. If I just want sneakers, tennis shoes or athletic shoes then I can go to a Nike or adidas store and generally they have size 10 but for dressier shoes, so far no luck.

I did end up buying shoes that seemed like they fit. One was a pair of low boots, it only took one day to realize the really were too small as my feet were killing me. I tried wearing them for about 4 days hoping they would stretch but after that I couldn't take it anymore.

I bought some more last week. They also seemed fine at first and they fit better than the boots. But, after a few days I started to notice the left foot, just below where the laces start is too tight and each day it seemed to get worse to where I can no longer where those shoes either as just a few steps and my left foot starts killing me. The right foot seems fine but I started noticing my right foot killing me later after I took the shoes off. Now that I've stopped wearing those shoes for a week that pain as gone away.

The shoes are supposedly "made in italy" so I asked the store if I could order the next size up. They said they don't make any larger sizes. At first I thought they must be lying since I suspect Italians have feet similar to Americans but after searching for the companies on the net I have a feeling that maybe, even if these shoes are made in Italy they are specifically made for a Japanese company because I could not find the shoes or the company mentioned anywhere on the net except the store chain I bought them at.

So, at the moment I'm stuck!

The shoes I have that are wearing out are Rockports and I would have been happy to buy some more of the same but Rockport switched their style. They used to carry semi-business like shoes. Now they only carry upgraded athletic shoes for lack of a better description.

Another big problem is shoes are EXPENSIVE in Japan or at least I'm not used to shoe prices. Most shoes are $150 and up. I've seen lots and lots for $400-$600 and even some as much as $2000!!!! WHAT THE HELL!! The Rockports I got 4 years ago were like $90 each and even at that I'm sure my dad would freak about those prices.

Anybody know where I can get normal American size shoes in Tokyo?

Shoes for the bigger [ e ]

Washingtons in Ginza has large sizes http://www.washington-shoe.co.jp (up to size 12 I think) on the 5th floor. We went there just a week ago and they had a great sale going on. If you go to the 3rd floor and ask to have your feet measured, a "Shoe Fitter" will do a precise measurement and talk to you about just how to find the perfect fit - to avoid the too tight around the laces or what ever.

Shoes Designed by you [ e ]

Customatix has a java-based design tool for shoes.. then their chinese factory makes them and ships them out to you asap.

I have like 3 pairs of them, and I swear by them. Their shoes go up to US size 15, so you should be able to find some. They are a bit pricey, 80-120 or so US$, though.

This morning while riding the subway I saw an ad for a Big Shoe store chain.  There is one in Shinjuku near Marui-Men (OI-MEN) down Yasukuni-dori toward 2-Chome.  I'll check it out this weekend.

oh man, i could have told you about that place last night!

i've been on major shopping trips there about 3 times. the first time i went, my eyes almost fell out of my head...i bought 5 pairs of shoes in about 15 minutes (i'm size 11-12 btw). I was happier than a paedophile in Neverland!

in short, they have a great selection, and they will have EVERYTHING in your size. Yes, there will no shoes there that will NOT fit you.

Outlets man!! [ e ]

Why don't you take a trip to an Outlet? I bought a few pairs from Timberland and Nike Outlets for 4000-10000 yen. I'm size 12.

Feets don't fail me now [ e ]

Why not just go online and buy a pair of Sketchers?

My personal advice? Tom Cats (style: 6618). Nice shoes for sixty bucks. Add postage, and you've got comfortable feet for two plus years for under a hundred.

Maybe code your address as "Armed Forces Pacific" or send them an e-mail to arrange shipping.

Done.

I know that there are several shops in both Ueno and Askakusa that have larger than normal shoes (for Japan).
My room mate wears a size 12 and he was able to buy shoes there. Does anyone know any good tailors? I need
suits and I can't get any for the same reason.

Italians do not have feet similar to American nor to the Europeans. In Italy people are smaller and have smaller feet a lot smaller than americans or Europeans. I am italian and work in the shoe biz I know about it. The average man size in Italy is an US 8

My problem is the other way around.  I have small feet.  Can't find shoes here.  Any online sites to buy Japanese shoes ... sandals, heels, etc.?

Help.

Try zappos.com.  They have hundreds of brands.  Free shipping, and have a outstanding return policy.  If you can't find something on their web site, looks like you might be out of luck.

Large Shoes Tokyo [ e ]

I found a store called "Ten -- Big Shoes Collection" in Shinjuku which had a lot of larger sizes in shoes for men and women, from 25cm upwards plus wider fittings too. The address is 7-8-13 Nishi Shinjuku. It's right next to a Tully's Coffee Shop and just a few doors down the same side of the street from Hirokoji Post Office on a busy main road. Take the D4 exit from Shinjuku station, cross the street and walk away from the station, and you'll come to it in ten minutes or so. The phone number is 03-3369-7511 and their website is http://shoes-ten.com

Happy hunting!
