Fever, Flu, Medicine
Like clockwork I came down with a cold. It's been 4 months since my last one, I generally get one every 3 months.

I'm a little bit disappointed though. A friend of mine told me she used to get sick as often as me but that she started taking supplements and she hasn't been sick in 3 years. I asked her which kind and she said Usana. Usana is about the most shifty company I've ever encountered. I'm sure the Usana fans will give me crap for this but you can't order Usana medicine without becoming a member. Try to find a place you can order and it's nearly impossible. The only way to become a member is to find some other member and ask them to let you join. That's hardly what I would call trustworth behavior.

Anyway, whether they work or not I don't know. I originally bought a competitor to Usana in November called Pharmex. They are just as creepy but I was able to find a place to order without having to become a member a member. Usana not only wants you to become a member but they give you the hard sell to sign up for automatically getting them every month

The biggest issue is both of them are relatively expensive. About $120 for a month's supply. Basically I'd have take them for six months and never get sick during those 6 months for me to believe in them and I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend $700 to find out, especially from such scary and unusualy business practices.

But, in either case I thought, what the heck, if they actually work it's worth it. So, I've been talking them for about 3 months but because of their expense I have only been talking half the dosage. I guess I'll try full dosage and post my results here.

Clearly half dosage didn't work since I'm sick and to be honest I don't really believe full dosage will work. Worse, both the Pharmex and the Usana make me feel sick if I take them without some other find of food. That's rather scary. Vitamins shouldn't make you feel like pucking IMO.

On the good side, today I went to the doctor and he had new toys. One was a flu test. It was very much like a pregnancy test. He took a nasal muscus sample (snot) and then applied it to the test. In 15 minutes it had bright blue lines across the test strip indicating flu. That's much better than all the doctors I've been to before which just said "You probably have the flu". Now I guess I can know they are correct.

On top of that, there is now real flu medicine. It's called Tamiflu. That's awesome. So many times in the past I've gone to the doctor and he's like "Well, you have a virus and there is nothing we can do for you so you'll be better in a week or so...Sorry we can't do more.".

The Tamiflu site claims if you get to your doctor early enough you can basically avoid most flu symptoms because of this medicine and with the test it's easy for the doctor to tell if he should give it to you or not.

I don't know if it's working yet. I just took my first pill about 6 hours ago.

In other news my fever right now is 103.2 which is why I'm up. I thought I'd go online and see if I could find some fever info. It sucks that info is kind of conflicting but the first one I found is this page which had several interesting points

*) Lowering you fever will only prolong your cold so don't do it if you can avoid it.

*) You can take up to 106 supposedly so I guess 103.2 is okay.

*) You don't really have to rest for a fever. You should not exert yourself but otheriwse sleeping will generally not make it go away faster. Of course I feel like crap so I'm sleeping to avoid being conscious.

*) Taking a cold shower is bad for you. A lukewarm shower is okay but a cold one can increase your temperature, especially if you start shivering.

*) Using your hand on someone's forehead will not tell you if you or your kids have a fever. Parents for example got it wrong more often then not including both ways. Thinking their kids had a fever when they didn't and worse, thinking they didn't when they did.

o daiji ni! [ e ]

Greg, you are not the only one who is affected. Several of my colleagues (I work in Tokyo) called in sick today. I myself had a severe cold the last couple of days, but it wasn't flu. So I guess that I was lucky this time.

And I agree with the advise of not trying to reduce your body temperature. Increasing the body temperature is one of the ways in which the body tries to fight the flu virus. You can help your body by trying to stay as warm as possible, so that your body does not need to burn a lot of energy to stay warm.

I never get sick anymore [ e ]

I'm not at all suggesting you are lazy by posting this.  Just wanted to get that out of the way to avoid a miscommunication!

I used to get sick like clockwork just like you. I'm young and have no major problems healthwise but I would always get sick.  I didnt eat that well - I'd have fast food a couple times a week, drank lots of soda, and avoided vegetables.

About 2 years ago I decided to get my act together and start eating better and working out.  I take no suppliments whatsoever, not even a multivitamin.  I eat lots of vegetables - strangely i LIKE how they taste.  I dont know why I hated them so much before. I eat lots of fish and lean meats.  I work out 4 days a week for 45 minutes doing both free weights and cardio.

I know I'm probably sounding like a infomercial by now but my point is this:  I've been sick only once in the last 3 years.  Its amazing. I feel great on a day to day basis and my immune system seems to be able to fight anything off.  In fact, my 2 roomates were both sick with the flue in the last month and I never so much as developed a sniffle.

Just wanted to share that suppliments are defintely not the only way to go - expecially at prices like you mentioned.  Just taking care of yourself can go a long way if you ask me.

As for right now - treating the flu.  Although its true that the fever is the body's natural way to fight off an infection, both my doctor-parents agree that a fever should be treated if it goes over 101 to avoid serious complications.  They have always recommended alternating a acetominaphin-based flu remedy like theraflu with ibuprofin tablets.  This maximizes pain relief but minimizes risk to the liver.  its worth a try anyways.  take care.

103 F seems kind of high [ e ]

"The Doctor" recomends Motrin to keep it down a bit; she also thinks that a temp that high *might* mean a bacterial infection (possibly in addition to the viral infection).  Anyways, does your doctor know you have a 103 F fever?

check your diet ... [ e ]

I agree with boD; check your eating habits.  If you're loading up on all the bad stuff, you'll definately get sick very easily.  While I'm no doctor (if possible) once you get better, I'd suggest finding alternatives to taking those over the counter medicines ... that is improve your diet by eating more raw vegetables (though some taste terrible), eating more fish, and not as much red meat.

Sometimes those medicines (motrin, etc) don't really do any to make your immune system stronger; they just chemically block the receptor sites so the virus can't lock in thus leaving the virus at the mercy of your immune system (if it's strong enough to destroy the virus).

The only time I get sick these days is when I travel ... Darned recycled air in those airplanes. :)

Average Colds [ e ]

Gregg, Google "average colds per year". You'll see that most pages suggest 3 colds per year is average for someone your age. So, maybe you're getting 4 per year. Not outrageous.

Forget about that vitamin supplement pseudo-science crap and just live as healthfully as you're able. If you feel you must take a supplement, buy a normal multi-vitamin. Stop listening to what the boutique vitamin people are telling (or selling) you and STOP paying attention to anecdotal evidence!

Well that's good to know but it certainly doesn't feel that way.

It could be that I have too many friends that don't get sick.  It could be that I only notice the ones that don't get sick.  It could also be that when I say sick I mean "unable to go to work" vs just feeling slightly under the weather.  Did your research say what was meant by "cold"?

Companies generally give 5 sick days a year?  I probably need 15.  Not for 15 different things but for being out longer for each individual one.

FEVER REMEDY [ e ]

According to Dr. Hulda Clark, not a medical doctor, but a researcher with a doctorate in biophysics and cell physiology, fever and diarrhea are usually  caused by salmonella.  Salmonella can be killed by taking 6 drops of Lugol's Iodine in 1/2 cup of water, 3-6 times a day.  I have tried this numerous times for diarrhea, and it stops it on a dime.  Since then, I've learned to sterilize the foods that cause the diarrhea, and I seldom have it anymore.  DO NOT USE LUGOL'S IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO IODINE.

I developed a fever which is really hanging on, and I had forgotten Dr. Clark's advice until last night, when I took my first dose of Lugol's.  My fever was down this morning by almost 2 degrees compared with the last two mornings.  I will  continue the protocol today and see how I do.

I really appreciate your candor, Greggman.  I also had a really good laugh, which has to be a healing thing, when you spoke about wanting to sleep to avoid feeling so horrible.  Ditto.  I feel awful!

Multibionta [ e ]

I used to get ill 3 or 4 times a year but have been completely free of any, and I mean any illness for the past year and a half now. The reason? I started taking Seven Seas Multibionta. Not sure how readily available that is in Japan but I could always send you some. They are just super-vitamins basically which you take everyday, they look like little hotdogs too Costs about £8 for 60 (US$15).

USANA supplements [ e ]

I would agree with your friend regarding the USANa supplements.  I have been taking them for 2 years and have never been sick since taking them.  My father started taking them and his high blood pressure dropped dramatically and he was able to get off all of his heart medicine.  I have never had a problem ordering the products.  They either let you enroll free and order products or just order the products off the website.  I enrolled at this website to become a free member or you can just order the USANA products from this page

ready to throw the USANA out [ e ]

My friend recommended USANA vitamins as being the best thing in the world--kind of a cure-all pill.  I invested in the 3-month supply and started taking them.  I got a strange shaky feeling in my abdomen, like my metabolism was going crazy and then the next day I got a cold.  I've tried taking the vitamins at half-dosage three times over the past year and every time I get the same result.  Shakiness and then a cold.  I'm throwing mine out and sticking with the cheap pre-natal vitamins I usually take.  They keep me from getting sick and don't cost nearly as much (and don't make my stomach queasy either).

usana [ e ]

I'm with your friend and Mike on Usana.  I used Nutrilite (amway) for several years and they're good too but more expensive.  Switched to Usana a few months ago and I think they're a little better.  I haven't really gotten sick for a few years except once I went on a trip and forgot my vitamins...coupled with some sleep deprivation, I caught a cold.  I honestly can't remember the last time I've had the flu.

But I wouldn't buy Usana from a distributor and there's definitely no need to become a member.  You need to discover the wonderful world of ebay, where you can get any kind of supplement imaginable, regardless of the company's distribution system.  And a whole lot cheaper, too.

the truth about the usana vitamins [ e ]

Like you i was skeptical for a lont time,  after several attempts of my best friend to get me to try the essentials by usana.  Well, Honestly i would get sick 3 or 4 times a year, but after using the product for about a year now. I can say i've never feel this great before.  Now i don;t have to worry about being sick for an exam or just missing days at work.  I really feel healthy now, before I though I was healthy....so i learnes waht true health means....therefore I can't live without my usana vitamins.  5 stars **** AAA+++ Recommended

Usana [ e ]

I am not affiliated with usana but I do buy the vitamins from a friend of mine who is a consultant with them.  I take their Healthpak100 and I pay about $100 a month for them.  I've never felt better in my life... I used to take Wellbutrin for depression and no longer have to, the vitamins were evidently all I needed.  I've lost weight, feel better... everything.  It's a lot of pills (5 in the morning and 5 at night) and I can taste them if I don't eat with them but I've gotten used to that and I wouldn't give them up for anything.  I haven't been sick for 6 months ever since I started taking them.

Vegetables do help prevent the flu [ e ]

Well from my experience Vegetables seem to almost prevent the flu. I have eaten a vegetable midday meal everyday for the last three years . The only cooked vegetable is the humble potatoe. All others are eaten raw and this includes lettuce, carrots, tomato, green and red capsicum and rasins and cashew nuts. I usually also have a slice or two of cornbeef or ham. My co-workers all have had the flu several times in the past 3 or so years but I have not even had a sniffle. It's simply amayzing. No vitamin supplements but lots of chocolate and at least 4 cups of coffee (percolated) every day. I introduced the meal to my boss and he had the same response. He originally suffered from high blood pressure and much to the surprise of his Doctor developed a perfectly normal pressure after several months on this midday meal. It's strange but I think I still get the flu. Sometimes I feel off colour, slightly sore throat etc but the symptoms never last longer than overnight and come maybe once a year. I never have any antibiotics or asprin and see my Doctor once a year for a checkup. I'm 65 years old and feel like I might live to be very old. Not sure if that's so great but there is always a minus to every plus.

Some Clarity on Usana and WHY you can't buy in stores [ e ]

I've been reading some comments on here, regarding the un-fairness of buying Usana vitamins.  The pharmaseucutical grade (USP) raw materials that are used top make the vitamins are itself expensive.  Most vitamins in stores are not required USP compliance.  So the materiasl they choose to use are CHEAP.    If you added wholesale- to distributor - to resale costs, USANA products would be close to $100 instead of $49.95.  Just imagine when you are buying a bottle of other vitamins from the store at $8, $15 etc, in the price are middle man costs to get the product to a CVS or Walgreens.  Dr. Wentz, the founder of USANA (and the only CEO who has his signature and picture on the product I might add) purposely cut out the middle man to keep costs low, so that the public could buy a superb quality product. In regards to USP grade materials, Usana, Douglas Laboratories, Vitamin Research and Source Naturals use these materials.  Usana, is one of the few companies that actually has it's own manufacturing plant.  The cheaper competition outsources to manufactuers.

The distributors thay pay commissions to is less than the costs to put products in stores.  Now, I read above that some people on this forum think this is a crazy pyramid scheme.  Their system of network marketing utilized is the next wave of millionaires in this country.  It gives people the opportunity to create a business from home, part-time and take further tax deductions from Uncle Sam.  It'a team sport, in that no man is left behind to struggle on his own and a win-win is created for everyone.  In fact, you can be making more than the guy above you because if he's not pulling his own weight.  That's fair.

WHen I think pyramid, I see  a person working for a company and at the top a CEO makes all the money, leveraging your hours into his pocket. It's called a job.  That's the oldest sceme in itself. Not only that, you can we working your tail off for a manger who does nothing compared to your efforts and he still gets paid more than you.  Would you rather work for someone all your life, giving your time way or have a home based business working with a team of people where no man gets left behind and build residual income?  Last time I checked, you can't leave a job to your kids, but you can leave a business.

I apolgize if this may have offended anyone, but it was not my intent.  I read allot of mis-informed and generalized statements above regarding the Usana product which has helped my health condition improve 110% the past two years.  And the people I know who have a USANA business...they are doing well and one of them doesn't work a job anymore.  Better health, more financial stability, helping people, that's what life is about!

Here's to a prosperous life!

Usana.....posted by a dumb blonde! [ e ]

My girlfriend began dating a gentleman that was a Usana Distributer. He started her on the vitamins and she began losing weight and feeling great. She invested to become a distributor herself and started hounding me to try them. There is not one person in this world that is a bigger skeptic than I am. I thought, what an idiot...you meet this guy and cough up cash to invest in some dumb vitamin thing to impress a man.

She gave me a sample pack of the skin care line which I pitched into my suitcase thinking, well, good travel size and forgot about it until I was in Dallas on business and tried them. I washed my face, moisturized and went to bed. It smelled nice and fresh. I was a licensed cosmetologist and worked at Sak's years ago and have used the most expensive products on the market. I swear to you, I could not keep my hands off of my face. Never in my life have I noticed such an immediate difference in the feel of my skin. I tried the shampoo and conditioner and i couldn't keep my hands out of my hair. I felt like a porn star or something, constantly running my fingers thru my hair and on my face..lol.

Okay, I told her..order me the Health Pack thing, I've got to try this stuff. I also ordered the Reset program. It resets your body with the proper levels of glucose and all the good stuff your body needs, supposedly. I'll be damned if I didn't drop 9 lbs the first week and out of no where came this abundance of energy. I have a prolapsted mitral valve and am very sensitive to caffeine and any energy boosting ingredients but had zero negative side effects..only postive, life changing effects. I keep thinking, okay, there has to be cocaine or something thats bad for you in these things to make you feel so good. I have done my research but only because I was searching for something negative on this product and can't.

I didn't have money to invest in becoming a distributor or anything but I signed up as a member (for free) just so I could go online and order them at cost and not have to go through a distributor. I've been using the skincare and vitamins for a year now and damn, baby, not only do I look good but I feel good and have not been sick since I began taking them. It's amazing what proper nutrician can do for a person...duh! I read that the inventor of these vitamins, this Dr. Lentz, did cell reseach most of his life and his job as a doctor was to figure out how to keep human cells alive and healthy. This is how Usana came about. I can tell you I even saw something on CNN about these products and if they're the only vitamins listed in the PDR as being beneficial to your health, I decided to quit wasting my time doing research and live the best life I can live......healthy, happy, illness free, looking and feeling great. When I run out of vitamins, I call my girlfriend and tell her I need "a fix" until I can get mine ordered. I have tried every one of the products. The toothpaste is killer diller. My gums are pink and heathy. My girlfriend is a smoker and started using the toothpaste and her dentist congratulated her for stopping smoking coz he noticed her gums were pink and healthy. She didn't have the heart to tell him she didn't quit, so she just said, "thanks".

I don't sell this stuff, I probably should since I hear people are becoming millionaires doing it. I can only tell you the products are freakin awesome.

Mike W should Check his facts [ e ]

There is no proof that USANA uses USP grade materials.  USANAs products are not listed on the USP web-site nor have they ever been.  USANAs wording in reference to the USP is mis-leading in an attempt to confuse the issue.  They have never been tested or certified by the USP.

The same can be said about their wording for Pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practices and the FDA.  The FDA does not police USANA for Pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practices because the FDA does not apply these standards to supplement companies.  It is USANAs argument that the requirements of the Therapeutic Goods Administration are identical (although they also say that they're better so I guess they really do have a problem keeping their story straight) to the FDAs.  Well then that would mean that Centrum is also as high quality as USANAs supplements and yet can be purchased for a much lower price.

Do some actual research into this companies claims and you'll quickly see a web of deception meant to impart worth in an otherwise unremarkable product.

Your comment about all companies being pyramids is the most ridiculous comment that I've come across time and time again by people enrolled in these scams whether it's USANA, Monavie, Quickstar or what have you.  A regular business is not solely driven by people who are hired to perform the exact same function as everyone else.  The CEO at the top is not doing the same job as the person on the bottom and, in fact, is not necessarily making the most money.  The true issue people have with Pyramid Schemes is that they require the constant recruitment in order for people to see success eventually dooming those on the lower levels because it is a system which will eventually run out of places to move.  The current slowing in recruitment in North America and USANAs need to spread to newer markets exemplifies this.

Life is about better health, financial stability and helping people, but that's not what USANA is about.  It's about recruitment, recruitment, recruitment.  All while under educating and misleading others about the truth behind the product, the structure and the company.

Thanks everyone for sharing, btw I stumbled across this site by way of googling "usana, flu".

hey, i like to share :) i'm right now having a cold - as i've learnt a cold is a symptom of a disease and it's not a disease in itself. I've always not been taking care of my health - my diet is rather poor, I'm 50kilos where I should be 70kilos and I sleep irregularly and I exercise once or twice in a month...

BTW, the past few days I've started to take the Usana's AOpro and Chilated Minerals regulary, and so now I'm having the flu. So I'm quite stumped as to why I'm getting sick... I am suspecting that my body has yet to get used to good supplementation (just like me going gym for the first time and having cramps later).

My wish is to get well soon and maintain an good and excellent lifestyle health wise. It's true what the song says "dont it allways seem to go, when you dont know what you got till its gone..."

For everyone whos sceptical with network marketing, I understand where you guys are coming from.. bad experiences, little to no information and disinformation are the main reasons IMHO. I've been involved in 2 network marketing companies before and have left them due to these reasons (and I wasnt as motivated back then).

If you still think there are loads of successful people in this industry and you might think this industry does work for a lot of people AND if ever you decide to give it a try, first find out what you want for yourself so that this industry can work for you e.g. you want a great team, great support, great products, great compensation plan, reputable company.

I am in no way promoting usana, but I am promoting network marketing in general, as it has helped some people that I personally know of... so guys, dont give up and always be on the lookout for opportunities.

Thanks for reading.

to health, wealth, and to a peaceful place on this little planet of ours :D
