Thumb Plug TGA

Can you figure out what's different about this picture?

Look close.....The difference is you are seeing thumbnails for TGA files inside Windows Explorer!!!  That also means you can see them inside pretty much any file open / file save dialog.  Hooray!

Windows 2000 and XP provide thumbnails for .JPG, .GIF, .BMP, .AVI, .MPG and a few other formats.  What's cool though is Windows 2000 and XP also provide an API for adding support for more formats.  So, I found an example, whipped out some old TGA code and threw this together.

Not too many *normal* people use the TGA format but in the video and computer game industry it's pretty popular.  Probably because it's supported by most graphics software and because it's very simple to use.  You can read or write a basic TGA file in just a few lines of code.

Just in case you are not aware, the same function is available inside the normal Windows standard file open/save window so for example if you are in Maya selecting a texture file you can select by clicking on a thumbnail instead of having to remember the name of the file.

To do this, in the file open/save window you click the last icon on the right and pick "thumbnails" (1)

Also, just incase you didn't notice you can resize the standard file open/save window (2) so that you can see more files at once.

Download:

You can download the installer by clicking the link below.

thumbplug_tga1.10.exe (268k)
[ for TGA (Targa) files ]

There is also a version for Softimage PIC files.

thumbplug_pic1.11.exe (309k)
[ for PIC (Softimage) files ]

And for Maya IFF files.

thumbplug_iff1.09.exe (314k)
[ for IFF (Maya) files ]

THERE IS NO WARRANTY HERE.  USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!  THERE IS ALSO NO SUPPORT!

Notes:

The TGA(Targa) format supports many formats but most of them are pretty rare.  For example, TGA files can have their images stored in any direction, right to left, bottom to top, top to bottom, left to right.  They can also support 15 and 16 bit pixels.  But, in my personal experience, I've never seen a TGA file stored any way other than bottom to top + left to right.  I've also never personally used a 16 bit TGA file nor have I used or seen any of the other options.  Therefore, there is no support for those other formats in this plug in.  If you need support, see below

The PIC format also supports many formats.  This plugin currently only supports 24bit and 32bit files.

Version History:

v1.10 2004-08-15

IFF

The source is provided under a FreeBSD style license.  If you do find a bug or add a feature I'd be happy to hear about it for if you find it really useful it would be nice to hear.

You can download the source code here

thumbplug_pic_src1.11.zip (25k)

Windows 2000 movie thumbs

My Windows 2000 sp4 does not show avi, mpeg, wmv thumbnails, only the media player icon.  Any idea how I may enable thumbs for these files?  Thanks!

Causes Windows Explorer to glitch badly
Okay, I am looking at the graphics from Doom 3 using this plugin. The first two folders (of unzipped achives) went smoothly, but the third one caused Windows Explorer to be discolored and have some serious display problems. Solution: Uninstall. Also caused some other strange problems in Windows Explorer. This is very useful yet very glitchy ...

Permanent Problem?
Defying all logic and reason I decided to reinstall this disaster. Not long after viewing a folder full of tga's. I got the same problems as before which include: Explorer being discolored, right-click context menu being displayed in the wrong place, right-click menu being discolored, explorer 'file and folder task' menu disappearing, and tga thumbnails not appearing. And here is a seemingly permanent problem that even system restore failed to solve: Most of the shortcut icons on my desktop have been repaced by the default icon. It looks like a blank window. Uninstalling did not solve the desktop icon problem either. How can such a small extension mess up so much? I am running Win XP Home SP2. This says, "use at your own risk," for a reason!!! Beware!!! I have had worms and trojans do less damage....

I don't mean to belittle the trouble you are having so please don't take this the wrong way but over 30,000 people are running it without problems.  So, while there may be a bug, the odds are there is something else about your system that is conflicting with it that apparently no one else is running.  Unfortunately there's nothing I can do about that.  Since the bug appears only on your machine the only possible way to find it would be to use your machine to debug and even then, it would be nearly impossible to find except to start uninstalling other stuff and hope we found out which one thing it is.

Great Job

Hi, Thank you very much for this extremely useful utility. I am an Architect who use 3D programs and TGA is my preferred format for high res renderings. Your utility has come out to be very handy and indispensible. I wish we had something for PDF files as well.

I was going nuts!

Thanks for this little gem. tga files are all the rage for skinning the pocket pc and for use in various PPC desktop replacement programs. I was going nuts trying to figure out what 'icon1.tga' was. Multply that by a couple hundred icons and, well, you get the drift.

Thanks much!

You the man!

I can't believe why Microsoft never added TGA thumbs in the first place. I use TGAs everyday and this beats hunting for files or wasting time opening up image browser..

BIG thanks!

Doesn't play nice with XP x64 :(

Hey!

Well, I thought I had found the perfect solution for my woe but it seems Win XP x64 doesn't want to display the .tga in thumbnail view.

The program installed without a hitch. My guess is x64 has a different way to use the shell extension... *shrug*

I'll gladly make some beta testing if you need a hand :)

Hero
You are my new hero.  This takes dealing with these Neverwinter Nights portraits SO much easier.  There is a program that lets you organize the portraits a bit, but NOT rename it.  Now I can view the portrait and rename within Explorer.  Thank you!

Big time saver (WIN2KPro)
I had been working with .png image files because I could not preview .tga in Windows Explorer. When forced to use .tga I was having to painstakingly open them all in another graphics app just to get a look at them. This little program is a great find and will save me hours of work. Thanks!

The tga and pic programs work wonderfully.  The iff program does not register itself properly on a fresh install (default) of WinXP-sp2 and complains about missing image.dll. (It's right, there is no image.dll on my harddrive.) Any clue what component/program supplies this?

Excellent

Nice one.

Been looking for something like this for a while.  Really helps with the designing thing.  Quick thought though, I've found that a few of my games (X3 being the first to spring to mind) save the Targa upside down and mirrored.  You've just made my job easier

Works great

Hi, your plugin does everything it said it would, although I was hoping that the support would go for paint aswell, it really sucks that windows doesn´t support a format that has such a big importance in the IT industry (although that is pretty much only when it´s about graphics-stuff such as games, mainly 3D, and other 3D stuff aswell)

Thank you for making Thumbplug TGA. It is a useful tool for me. I can view tga image easily and quickly.

Is it possible that let Windows Picture and Fax Viewer(the default image viewer of Windows XP) support TGA?

Thanks a lot :)

I installed the program and it works as far as me being able to see the thumbnails, but what program should i use to actually view them?
posted by chadApril 23, 2006 at 0:06 [ e ]

I use photoshop to view them. Basically if you have a need to view TGA images you most likely have tools to edit them. It's not a common format outside of video and game production.

Another suggestion is ACDSee if you just want to view them. Otherwise the gimp will also edit TGA files.

XP Home SP2

What am I doing wrong?

Ran the installer. rebooted and XP still restarts when I point explorer at a TGA file set to view as a thumbnail.

AAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like I will have to go looking for ACDSee.

Missing image.dll on installation on iff viewer

I encountered the same error mentioned by LJones on two XP SP2 systems. Common features include both having Lightwave 7.00 installed.

Does anybody know how a "safe" copy of image.dll can be obtained, bearing in mind that this this file has been documented as adware!

Amazing how something so small can be so amazingly useful!  I do a lot of work with screenshots and textures for max, this is an absolute godsend! I've been using this for the last two years and had a major panic when I had to reinstall Windows last week - panic over, I found Thumbplug again!

Thanks again,

.pic for quicktime

FYI,

sofitmage .pic files are usually associated with the Quicktime picture viewer.

This won't allow Explorer show thumbnails for them, but there is a codec for Quicktime to understand Softimage's .pic files here http://www.xsi-blog.com/?p=101

The codec is only 70k and you send to anyone who might need to see .pic files

Ok now I can view my screenshots as thumbnails but when I try to open them with paint or internet explore, it says the TGA file cant be opened with the program. Alittle help? :P
posted by SamanthaJuly 16, 2006 at 22:51 [ e ]

You'll need to download some software to view TGA files with. Quicktime works. Another popular one is Acdsee.

Great tool! Now can it be done for 64bit Explorer?
This is pretty spiffy. There's only one thing that holds me back on it

You've developed this for the 32bit version of Windows Explorer, so it works on Windows XP 64 if you use the 32bit Explorer.

Unfortuneately the default Explorer on XP64 is of course the 64bit version. Could you release a compile/installer that will add this feature to the 64bit version of Explorer?

, and put it into your WINDOWS\\system32 directory. I've only tried it on XP X64, but it should work on 2003 also. Thanks greggman for an awesome shell extension!

A few minor problems, but otherwise brilliant!
Like one of the much earlier posters here, I use this fantastic little app to view all the TGA textures for Doom3 - generally it works extremely well and has completely removed the headaches of browsing large numbers of textures at once... but I have noticed that after a peroid of using the app through Max7 to browse the TGA files the browser window stops refreshing and eventually refuses to work at all. Could be Max7, could be WinXP Pro - I just don't know. I do have 1GB DDR Ram, so I wonder if it's just a simple 'out of memory' issue...? Max7 remains stable, however.

After a restart all is well - it's a bit of pain, but I guess I can't complain too loudly; this is a free app, after all.
