El Cishco(sp?)

If you are looking for good mexican food in Tokyo well, you are basically S.O.L. But, in the meantime you can try this place. In Japanese it's written ERU KISHIKO. I assume it's something in Spanish translated to Japanese and so it's not exactly correct. Maybe El Cishico?

Well, it's not bad. I felt like I got some of my mexican food fix there. In general Japanese don't like refried beans or black beans. I think it's because they are used to sweet beans. They eat "an" beans all the time. They have almost exactly the same texture as refried beans but they are sweet and they get put inside donuts and other Japanese desserts. It's probably exactly the opposite for most Americans. Being used to beans as a non-sweet thing it's hard to except the concept of sweet beans. Fortunately I like them both

But, the point of all that is this restaurant had no beans or at least not many and I'm guessing that's because most Japanese patrons wouldn't eat them.

You just told the world about our secret mexican food hideout. Now we're never gonna be able to get a seat! =)

At least keep the lair of the kerosene under your hat. We can't afford to let that place get more crowded than it already is...

so when are we going? [ e ]

Yuki and I have been craving Mexican food recently - unlike you two we aren't burdened with high expectations (the Irish idea of spicy food being salt on your boiled potato - and the Japanese being a microscopic dab of wasabi on sushi).

I can't decide whether i'd rather go hera or the ramen place. damn.

What about [ e ]

El Torito?  Not very exotic, but still hits the spot for my Mexican cravings.

El Torito [ e ]

Is about as Mexican as Taco Bell.

I don't mind El Torito, at least I can get a guac, salsa and chip fix (although I make better guac and better salsa) but El Torito is pretty much Americanized Mexican food or at least it's not what I'm looking for when I'm really craving Mexican food.

When I'm really craving I want something like La Costena.

They have giant burittos, tons of toppings and all these different meats.

CHICKEN

  • POLLO ENCEBOLLADO (GRILLED)
  • POLLO ADOBADO (MARINATED AND GRILLED)
  • POLLO EN MOLE (UNIQUELY MEXICAN)
  • POLLO BORRACHO (STEWED IN REAL BEER)

BEEF

  • CARNE AZADA (OUR BEST SELLER)
  • CHILE COLORADO (TENDER AND JUICY)
  • BISTEK RANCHERO (STEWED BEEF STRIPS)
  • AL MOJO DE AJO (GRILLED GARLIC STEAK)
  • FIESTA (FAJITA STYLE)

PORK

  • CARNITAS (FRIED PORK)
  • CHILE VERDE (IN TOMATILLO SAUCE)
  • AL PASTOR (MARINATED AND GRILLED)

SHRIMP

  • TIGER SHRIMP

Those are burittos!  We called them "the obelisks of sublime terror" as they are so big you know you will burst something trying to finish one.  And I'm talking about a regular size.  You'd be insane to order a super.  And of course they are not just big but super delicious!

If it's in nishi-ogikubo [ e ]

It's El Quixico.  Little hole-in-the-wall place on the second floor.  When you're inside you feel about a gazillion miles outside of Tokyo.  The food is "kinda Mexican" but good nonetheless -- definitely different from chain Mexican.  Also, they have very unusual cocktails.  I actually survived a Calpis Margarita (about as tasty as the name would suggest).  :)
